The Calgary Wranglers opened the 2026-27 season with a 4-2 victory over their rivals, the Abbotsford Canucks.
Calgary jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening period, with rookies Jonathan Castagna and Tyson Gross each finding the back of the net. Mike Benning extended the Wranglers’ lead early in the second period with his 27th career goal.

Abbotsford responded with a pair of goals to cut Calgary’s lead to one. However, the Wranglers held strong in the third period, killing off two penalties to finish the night perfect on the penalty kill. Castagna sealed the victory with his second goal of the night, scoring into the empty net.
Arsenii Sergeev earned the win in goal, stopping 30 of 32 shots faced.
The Calgary Wranglers announced yesterday their leadership group for the 2026–27 season, with Rory Kerins serving as team captain. He will be joined by Ben Jones, Sam Morton, Alex Gallant and Dryden Hunt as alternate captains. Rory Kerins has been named the third captain in Calgary Wranglers history, succeeding former captain Clark Bishop. Kerins takes on the leadership role after developing within the organization and playing under Brett Sutter, the first captain in Wranglers history and now the club’s head coach.
